Why you can trust the the Baby-led feeding method?
Now, for premature babies or babies with low birth weight — Why is it so different?
It is so fascinating, and if you understand what can happen with a premature baby, you will also understand what is happening with your full-term baby.
Let me explain.
The reason we shift and complicate our approach with premature babies is because of immaturity and low weight.
They don’t have all it takes — all the energy it takes — to express their need or even get alert to ask for food.
So their body will kind of “choose” where to put the energy.
When the energy is so low, the first thing they will do is try to regain some energy — not through food, but through rest.
They don’t have enough energy to cry, wake up, get alert, and latch. This process costs too much energy.
So the wisest and most energy-saving strategy for them is rest, not food.
This is why we need to care for them. They don’t have rhythm yet, and it’s not about rhythm — it’s about giving them energy.
So we will disturb their rest as little as possible and feed them every three hours — and we’ll keep that up until they gain enough energy.
The Recovery from Birth Process
Actually, even in full-term babies, you kind of see that phenomenon — in less dramatic but very real ways.
Like, often when I do my Thalasso Baby Baths — because I see your babies! — you usually contact me before birth, then we stay in contact, and then I see your baby within 5 to 30 days after birth.
Most of the time, you will tell me:
“Oh, our baby is sleeping so much!
We are so blessed because our baby is sleeping through the night already.”
Then some days come, and you will text me during our follow-up and say:
“Okay, he was sleeping well and now we don’t know what we did wrong. He’s starting to wake up more often.”
And you know what?
Most of the time, nothing is wrong.
When I assess with you and do a check-up about what’s going on underneath the surface, basically what’s happening is: your baby is waking up, but not crying, not looking unsettled — just waking up.
And when that’s the case, it’s so good!
It means your baby needed to recover from a difficult birth.
