When the
feeding every 3h rules is not helping anymore?

If you have a premature baby, under 2.5kg weigh and or challenging medical condition﹣ The feeding every 3h rule will help baby get the energy he's missing.

If your baby is doing well﹣ The on-demand feeding method will help you baby gain weight easier.

Let me explain.
The reason why they don’t want to give a strict and rigid schedule to feed a full term born baby is because, by focusing so much on the clock, focusing too much on that rule — the three-hour rule — it brings to much doubts parents will get confused about why their baby doesn’t wake up or why the baby wakes up earlier and asks for a feed earlier.

It opens the door to dogmas and opinion based advice around feeding, sleeping and responding to baby needs.

And here’s why that matters deeply:

This kind of confusion often leads parents to either :

- wake their baby unnecessarily

- worry, feel frustrated

- try to fix a problem that isn’t actually a problem — like when babies ask for a feed only after one hour and a half, create digestive overload

It creates worry and keeps parents from truly watch and read their baby. It delay the beginning the journey of understanding their baby and decoding their needs in a helpful, connected way. It puts parents and babies apart.

FEW CASES YOU CAN STILL FIND 3H HELPFUL FOR YOU AS THE CARER

Overall, giving parents a rigid, strict feeding schedule to follow was not helping.
But some parents out their will find it helpful, for themself.
Because it was one of the thing that help them:

  • structure their mind in that vertiginous unknown era

  • help them visualise and organise their day ahead.

but in terms of making the baby gain weight more efficiently — it wasn’t helping.

What works at that point — when your baby has enough weight and is fully mature (because that’s what we mean by full term born) — is that they are mature enough to ask for a feed when they need it.

And the reason why I say we can trust them. We can rely on them to express what they need and when they need it, it’s because here is what is happening.

Why WHO follow the baby-led feeding method?   →
